He says he was accused by ZBH finance and corporate services general manager, Samukeliso Gono of appointing himself the spokesperson of Hola Africa, a reality show that had Zimbabwean participants. Marime told us in an interview fearing he could court controversy: "Since my days as a presenter of youth.com back in Harare the journey has been bitter-sweet." On the bright side each day I spent at ZBC convinced me that this was a journey going somewhere rewarding.
HE was a bubbly presenter with a lot of promise but Arthur Marime unceremoniously left the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) to settle in a country that has a cut-throat entertainment industry. Marime widely known as Riimz Afrika left the country for South Africa last year after a fallout with management at ZTV, the only television station in the country.
"My definition of rewarding by the way is not material gain but rather being able to put so much of your time into one thing, get so tired but at the end of it all go to bed with a smile and satisfaction." Marime's voice is back in Zimbabwe through the Dstv audio service and free-to-air decoders.
He is back on television courtesy of Mnet Africa Magic channel 114 where he has found a home presenting arts and culture as well as current affairs in the hugely popular, Africa Awakes programme. "It was not easy but now can you believe that I am part of the commercial station called Kaya FM 95.9 which targets the working black diamond or the BEE as they are termed. "I am also on Mnet now. It's a dream come true! "On Kaya FM I do weekends playing till the sun comes up (1am- 6am)" Kaya FM is available on Dstv through their DMX audio service. Marime works for the retail radio station in South Africa Radio Pick 'n Pay. Pick 'n Pay broadcasts to all 780 stores nationwide. "Some shops have 72 till points in them. I do the breakfast show there every weekday morning.
"You can catch it on wiztech decoders. On the show I speak to the 52 000 Pick 'n Pay employees and shoppers," Marime says. Africa Awakes, which has most of its viewership in Nigeria, has seen the radio and television personality lining up some gigs in the West African country. "I have always wanted to penetrate the Nigerian market. I am not stopping." But South Africa is not a country kind to foreigners penetrating the entertainment industry as many in Zimbabwe like Tich Matambanadzo and Tonderai Katsande will testify. What is it like? "Once one is a Zimbo (Zimbabwean) you lose credibility within the broadcast field from peers. "However, I have noticed that being from Zimbabwean is fashionable with South African women. "It is sad that a number of Zimbabwean colleagues also in the broadcast arena have turned their backs on being Zimbabwean, something which really hurts me."
Marime, who is still single, had no kind words for ZBC. "People were more concerned about money than the passion for what they were doing and therefore one is easily replaceable. "You could be talented and you could enhance the show but that talent is not priority, the priority is let's just get the job done and get the little we get at the end of the month. It seems Marime is in the driving seat and he certainly is not resting on his laurel.
