Rassie Ai set to return home

The Kings brother ready to return homeREGGAE musician, Takura Makoni brother of late local Hip Hop Icon Tonderai ‘Kingpin' Makoni is set to return home to Zimbabwe after spending ten years in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

His return will be coupled with the release of his new album that has not yet been named. In an exclusive interview with Zimpartypeople.com, Rassie took us back down memory lane to the time that he started music.

He told this reporter that he started out as a rapper before venturing into reggae upon the realization that his late younger brother was a better rapper. "Tonde (Kingpin) came to me with a rap verse he was working on and as soon as I heard it I realized that I wasn't really good at rap."

"That's when I moved on to reggae music, I already had a passion for reggae but that was my moment of truth. I think you all know how good a rapper my brother was," said a nostalgic Rassie.

The reggae musician added that locally he did a mix tape with his late brother in 1999 before moving to Belfast, Northern Island in 2000 where he has been based till today. There (Northern Island) the reggae musician-cum-producer did a couple of mix tapes and in 2006 he did his first promotional album dubbed Munhumutapa-Man which was a build-up to his debut Return to Life. This album was dedicated to his late brother who died in 2003.

"I had stopped music in 2003 until December 2006 when my friends, Kudakwashe Musasiwa and Munyaradzi Nota linked up with me and vowed not to watch my talent die down.

"The same year we formed DKR Records and did my promo album Munhumutapa-Man. These guys filled the empty space in my universe that had previously been occupied by the physical presence of Kingpin," said an emotional Rassie.

In 2009 he did his first official album Return to Life with his friends Nota and Musasiwa, which is dedicated to his late brother. It was then that he got involved with a British charity called Beyond Skin which is a coalition of musicians from all over the world that performs at schools, colleges, and universities and at cooperate functions preaching the gospel of love, peace and unity through music.

Rassie spoke at length about the support he has been getting from fellow artistes; the likes of Trevor Hall, Transit Crew, Local producer MacGyver, Dj Smoove and most importantly his father, the former honorable minister and 2008 presidential candidate, Dr Simba Makoni.

Rassie exclusively told zimpartypeople.com that he will be coming back to stay in Zimbabwe sometime this year. He also added that he is moving his record company to Zimbabwe sighting that Zimbabwe is flooded with a lot of talent that is suffering from lack of adequate marketing. He concluded by noting that with the right marketing Zimbabwean musicians have the full potential to make it in the world market.

"My Munhumutapa Records company wil focus on marketing artistes as that is where the bread lies.

"I am coming home for good, my fourth coming album which I haven't named yet will be completed here and will be an example of my marketing plans for local musicians," said Rassie.
